The number of labels you need to print effects the type of label printer you'll need. For example, if you have high volume labeling needs, you'll need a solid, heavy-duty machine. If you only need to occasionally print labels, you have the option of using a lighter (lower cost)) machine. The following provides a general rule of thumb for how label printers are rated based on the quantity of labels to be printed in a 24 hour period. |

| Heavy use | Over 500 labels daily. The labeling machine has to be able to handle a 24-7 load. |
| Medium use | 100-500 labels daily. |
| Light Use | 100 or fewer labels daily. |
| Occasional Use | A few labels each week. |
