Continue training and
maintaining the standards.
Once your Five-S System
is set up, don't walk away and assume nothing will change. Things
don't work that way. Don't
expect that you can clean up, get things organized and labeled,
and ask people to clean and inspect their areas every day -- and
then have everything continue to happen without any follow-up. You'll need to establish
a formal system for monitoring and evaluating the results of your
Five-S System. That's why this final step is called "sustain".
An important
aspect of any ongoing support system is that you continue to educate
people about maintaining standards. First, be sure to train new
employees. This training can easily be a part of their normal safety
training. Second, be sure to provide continued training. People
need to be refreshed as to what the proceedures are and the reasons
for those proceedures. Again this training can be a part of your
normal safety training, or it can be a separate.
In your ongoing
training be sure to address changes in the workplace - such as new
equipment, new products, new work rules. And be sure to modify your
standards when changes such as these are introduced in the workplace.
Another part
of your ongoing efforts to sustain your Five-S System is to use
labelers, sign makers and poster printers to help inform and educate
people and keep then informated about changes that effect their
work area. For
example, post daily inspection proceedures on all existing machines.
When a new machine is introduced into the workplace, be sure the
daily inspection proceedures are on that machine before goes into
operation.
Once your Five-S
System is operating, you'll be reaping the benefits such as: improved
safety, better productivity, improved quality, etc. Think of this
step as sustaining these benefits.
What are the Five-S's?
